Since childhood, I have made pictures of nature and animals. In conceptualizing my images I feel an affinity with the late medieval artists who portrayed accurate, carefully observed animals and simultaneously expressed through them a spiritual message.

Because my botanist grandfather taught me to look at nature in a scientific way, I have always perceived an order and structure in nature. My drawings reflect the natural world, full of apparently chaotic activity on the surface, but revealing underlying structure and pattern on closer observation.
